Mission Statement

Our mission to enable African Americans and other minorities to attain economic self-reliance, parity, power, and civil rights. Our goal is to help African Americans and other minorities succeed in Baltimore's socio-economic mainstream.

Description

The National Urban League, founded in 1910 is the nation's oldest and largest community-based movement devoted to empowering African Americans to enter the economic and social mainstream. The Greater Baltimore Urban League movement was founded in 1924.

Our three-prolonged strategy for pursing the mission is:

• Ensuring that our children are well-educated and equipped for economic self-reliance;

• Helping adults attain economic self-sufficiency through good jobs, home ownership, entrepreneurship and wealth accumulation;

• Ensuring our civil rights by eradicating all barriers to equal participation in the economic and social mainstream of America.

The Greater Baltimore Urban League movement carries out its mission through direct services, advocacy, research, policy analysis, community mobilization, collaboration and communications. In our mission to help African-Americans and other minorities succeed in Baltimore's economic mainstream, we create programs and partnerships that reach every corner of the city. GBUL runs a collaborative youth leadership development project called Saturday Leadership Program and is a leading partner in Baltimore's College Access Consortium, a team of like-minded leaders in education dedicated to reducing Baltimore's academic achievement gaps.
