The American Red Cross International Services Department (ISD) seeks to prevent and alleviate human suffering around the world by responding to disasters, building safer, more resilient communities, and educating future humanitarians. With programs and partners in 70 countries, the American Red Cross is working to strengthen the global Red Cross Red Crescent Network in order to deliver critical assistance to some of the most vulnerable communities in the world, reaching 100 million people annually.

Summary:
The American Red Cross seeks a part time Fall intern (20hrs/week; September through December 2014) to support our International Services’ Security Unit. The International Security Advisor’s Office supports the American Red Cross’ work in more than 25 countries, helping to mitigate risks encountered by staff when posted and traveling internationally. This is an unpaid internship.

Responsibilities:
A security intern is needed to aid in the effort to implement and maintain security mechanisms for American Red Cross’ International Services Department operations. The proposed intern will assist in the following activities:

  • Monitor and report security events and the international movements of staff to the Senior Security Advisor (SSA)
  • Monitor and identify global security incidents and trends that are country-specific to ISD global operations through open source internet sites
  • Conduct verbal country security briefings and prepare written security memorandums for all ISD staff deploying or traveling internationally
  • Collect incident reports and update Security Incident Databases by country, month and year
  • Create maps of locations of programs, offices/residences and security incidents
  • Provide support to the SSA

Qualifications:
This is a substantive internship with responsibilities. Correspondingly, it calls for a mature graduate student with some professional experience. Candidates must be motivated, detail-oriented and have strong quantitative, analysis, and writing skills. A background in international security and geopolitics is desired. A strong interest in international humanitarian security issues required.

Description

The national headquarters of the American Red Cross provides assistance with shaping and leading the organization in our mission and strategic plan. National Headquarters also assists with technical guidance to the many Red Cross units, such as Chapters, Armed Forces Emergency Services Stations and Blood Services regions. These units are responsible for the direct service to the community including disaster response and preparedness, messaging to Armed Forces military and their families, collecting and delivering blood products, teaching health and safety skills and helping reunite families through our international services.
