Be the mentor that an RVA kid needs to succeed!

WE NEED YOU!
In order to help our students get the most out of their experience with the FIRST robotics team at Wilder Middle School, we are looking to the community to share their expertise with our students. We need adults with knowledge/willingness to assist in any of the following areas to assist our coaches in guiding the team and sharing their knowledge and experiences. See below for more on the FIRST Robotics Team at Wilder Middle. The FIRST Robotics team meets every Tuesday from 3:30 to 5:30 pm through Feburary (and longer if the team qualifies for state/regional competitions). Once you express interest we can work with you to determine the Tuesday dates that best work for you.

Robot construction
- The game the robots are designed to play changes each year. Students are tasked with building a robot to perform tasks autonomously or driver controlled to play the game. Learning the principles of engineering is a vital part of the robotics season. Mentors are needed to help students through the process of designing and building the robot. Students need to build and power the robot using a common kit of parts and some additional supplies that are routinely found at a hardware or electronics store. Mentors are needed to teach students about wiring motors and servos, simple machine construction, prototyping, and other engineering and electronics topics. Anyone with a knowledge of safe hand tool use can be a valuable resource for our students.

Marketing & advertising - students are tasked with branding their team and their robot each year. Teams can use t-shirts and other costuming, mascots, banners, display boards and other marketing materials to create their brand. Students must make a presentation to a panel of judges at each competition. There are many judged awards available at each competition.

WOLVERINE ROBOTICS

The Wolverine robotics team is a FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) team registered with FIRST robotics and VirginiaFIRST robotics. We compete against other middle school and high school FTC teams in events around the state. Wolverine robotics is available to Wilder students in all grades. FTC is a student-centered activity that focuses on giving students a unique and stimulating experience. Each year, teams participate in a new game that requires them to design, build, test, and program autonomous and driver-operated robots that must perform a series of tasks. Students develop a greater appreciation of science and technology and how they might use that knowledge to impact the world around them in a positive manner. They also cultivate life skills such as:

Planning, brainstorming, and creative problem-solving

Research and technical skills.

Collaboration and teamwork

Appreciation of differences and respect for the ideas and contributions of others
