The Dr Tom Dooley Foundation
Dr Tom Dooley, the famous "Jungle doctor" had only two oil paintings of himself done in his lifetime. This is a photo of a poster made from one of the paintings that hung in the Dr Tom Dooley Hospital in Laos which the foundation supported for decades.

The African health care system is very backward by US standards. They have one fifteenth the number of surgeons per 100,000 people as in the US. The Foundation is heavily involved with training indigenous Africans to become surgeons. We need help at all levels. If a person has a talent and some time, all they need to do is contact Dr Lavely and he will put them to work. The foundation needs help with fund raising, medical supply donations procurement, website development, video production, and strategic board level activity. Right now the Ebola crisis has brought the world to know of the basic inadequacy of the health care system in Africa. The inadequacy exists in all areas of primary medical care. As Dr Tom Dooley often said, "We are our brother's keeper."

Description

The Dr Tom Dooley Foundation is a 42 year old non for profit whose mission is to implement the vision of Dr Dooley (1927-1961) to provide medical care to people in the Third World.

Dr Tom Dooley is the famous "Jungle Doctor" who first rose to international prominence through his leadership in the US Navy's first evacuation operation, Operation Freedom Lift, in French Indo China, when Vietnam was partitioned by the Geneva Treaty into North and South Vietnam.

Dr Dooley was a young US Naval doctor who coordinated the processing of refugees, from August 1954 to May 1955 and then wrote a best-selling book about it called Deliver Us From Evil. The forward for the book was written by Admiral Arleigh Burke, the Chief of Naval Operations, the highest ranking Naval Officer in the US Navy. Admiral Burke was the member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff representing the Navy during the 50s through the 80s.

Dr Dooley died of cancer at age 34, and the foundation was founded by his team of volunteers especially Teresa Gallagher and Tom's brother Malcolm Dooley, US Air Force, Captain (ret). It is the only foundation that has legal right to use Tom Dooley’s name from his executor of his estate, Malcolm Dooley.

Teresa Gallagher published a book Give Joy to My Youth: a Memoir of Tom Dooley in 1965.

The foundation is currently working in 14 countries of Africa, and all work in Southeast Asia has ceased.
