THIS POSITION STARTS IN FEB 2015

The Spokane Public Schools' On Track Academy is a credit completion program designed to provide at risk students high levels of interactive and relevant learning opportunities, a close look at career options and paths to college and training after graduation. At the Academy, kids are looked at as individuals with instructors helping them figure out what tools and opportunities they need to be successful and meet the same learning targets as other students in order to graduate high school and succeed in future careers. Their partnership with the Spokane Skills Center allows the students to learn about careers they are passionate about as they earn college credits. This is a great opportunity to positively impact the lives of students who might not otherwise graduate from high school without the programs the On Track Academy provides and furthermore helps set them onto a career path that they are passionate about. The students at the Academy face adversity in many different ways; they come from a neighborhood with one of the highest poverty rates in Washington State.

This is an AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteer in Service to America) position. AmeriCorps VISTA members are passionate and committed to their mission to bring individuals and communities out of poverty. Members make a year-long, full-time commitment to serve on a specific project at a nonprofit organization or public agency. They focus their efforts to build the organizational, administrative, and financial capacity of organizations that fight illiteracy, improve health services, foster economic development, and otherwise assist low-income communities. The Youth Entrepreneurial Coordinator VISTA will help prepare and launch a mentor program to include a needs assessment, curriculum development, mentor database tracking, recruiting and matching 15 mentors from the community with students, and evaluation of the program. The VISTA will also work with community partners to set up internships and job shadowing experiences for the students. The VISTA will also develop the foundation and infrastructure for community events that are student based to include creating a manual for planning future events, volunteer recruitment, marketing, and a sustainability plan. The VISTA will also create a shark tank competition to develop the business skills of the students.

Because AmeriCorps VISTA is aimed at fighting poverty with passion, the VISTA selected for this position will receive a living stipend of $11,676 for the year of service, option of an education award of $5730 or cash amount of $1500 upon successful completion of your year of service. Additional benefits include relocation, potential student loan forbearance, student loan interest forgiveness during service, childcare assistance, government Non Competitive Employment, assistance with finding affordable housing and of course the joy and fulfillment of serving others!
