As we continue to wait for Congress and/or the President to act to reform the immigration system, there’s something you can do now to impact the lives of Washington’s immigrant families: volunteer at Citizenship Day on October 18 th, 2014. Citizenship Day is a free legal clinic to help legal permanent residents apply for citizenship and it is hosted by the WA State Chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) and OneAmerica. Citizenship is a critical part of American Dream for many immigrant families but the high cost of attorneys and fear of the process stop many eligible people from becoming citizens. In 2012, there were an estimated 180,000 legal permanent residents living in Washington state who were eligible to naturalize, but only about 17,000 naturalizations (less than 10%). Help change that by volunteering with us!

We're looking for general volunteers to manage event flow and check in visitors, bilingual volunteers to serve as interpreters (Spanish), and law students/paralegals to help people fill out citizenship applications.

Last year, we had over 375 volunteers supporting Citizenship Days and were able to serve 531 individuals at 13 sites across the state!

About OneAmerica

Location:

1225 S. Weller Street, Suite 430, Seattle, WA 98144, US

Mission Statement

OneAmerica's mission is to advance the fundamental principles of democracy and justice through building power in immigrant communities, in collaboration with key allies.

Description

Initially named Hate Free Zone, the organization was founded immediately after September 11, 2001 to address the backlash in a post 9/11 world against immigrant communities of color, primarily Muslims, Arab Americans, East Africans, and South Asians. Recognizing a critical need for a strong immigrant rights organization, OneAmerica quickly expanded to fill that gap. Today, OneAmerica is the largest immigrant advocacy organization in Washington State, working both in the state and nationally with leading partners in varied communities and sectors to ensure that immigrant communities and their rights are recognized and upheld in our democracy.
