This is an AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteer in Service to America) position. AmeriCorps VISTA members are passionate and committed to their mission to bring individuals and communities out of poverty. Members make a year-long, full-time commitment to serve on a specific project at a nonprofit organization or public agency. They focus their efforts to build the organizational, administrative, and financial capacity of organizations that fight illiteracy, improve health services, foster economic development, and otherwise assist low-income communities. SCUW is a mobilizer for positive and lasting community change. We aim to improve the lives and futures of all people in our community. We bring together the expertise, funding and volunteer support to positively impact education, income and health - the building blocks for a good life. We work in partnership with others - individuals, nonprofits, government, businesses and other community partners to eliminate inequities experienced by low-income and diverse populations. The United Way VISTA Volunteer Engagement Coordinator will help connect people to volunteer opportunities within Spokane to help organizations support their efforts in the areas of education, income and health. This is a great opportunity to develop professional skills in the non-profit as well as for-profit spheres. United Way gets things done and the VISTA will be part of a team that engages the Spokane community to step up and give back!

The VISTA will be tasked to develop and implement a strategic volunteer engagement plan that supports SCUW’s vision for a more educated, prosperous and healthy community. The focus of this VISTA opportunity will be to research, asses and/or develop volunteer opportunities that help achieve SCUW’s 2020 goals to reduce the educational achievement gap; reduce the poverty trend line and decrease levels of abuse, neglect, and unhealthy behavior. The VISTA will also focus on maintaining and expanding SCUW’s on-line web based catalog of volunteer opportunities and support community-wide volunteer activities such as Spokane Gives Week- a week long initiative of volunteerism throughout Spokane. This VISTA position helps connect people to a greater sense of community, engage them in community action and volunteer opportunities that help fight inequality. Because AmeriCorps VISTA is aimed at fighting poverty, the VISTA selected for this position will receive a living stipend of $11,676 for the year of service, option of an education award of $5730 or cash amount of $1500 upon successful completion of your year of service. Additional benefits include relocation, potential student loan forbearance, student loan interest forgiveness during service, childcare assistance, government Non Competitive Employment, assistance with finding affordable housing and of course the joy and fulfillment of serving others!
