ORGANIZATION: Planned Parenthood of Northern New England

Do you want to be a part of a life-saving provision for millions of Americans? Under the Affordable Care Act, over 8 million Americans are now enrolled in health care that is tailored to their specific needs and lifestyle. At our Sanford and Biddeford health centers in York County, ME, Planned Parenthood of Northern New England needs dedicated volunteers to work one-on-one with individuals who need assistance in enrolling for a health insurance plan through Maine’s marketplace. Ample training provided. This is a great opportunity for people interested in making a big difference in their community by ensuring that all Maine residents have access to affordable health care.

All potential applicants are required to pass a background check before being accepted to the program. To be approved as a Certified Application Counselor, all volunteers must complete nine and a half hours of mandatory training in addition to three hours of shadowing with a Certified Application Counselor.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist individuals and families enroll in a marketplace plan offered on Maine’s health care exchange
  • Answer a variety of questions about the marketplace and individual health care plans
  • Explain preventative benefits of individual insurance plans
  • Read and pursue frequent updates about the exchange and counselor strategies
  • Inform women about their women-only preventative benefits on their insurance plans

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to sit and key stroke for at least four hours
  • Past experience/knowledge in health care or insurance a plus, but not required
  • Comfortable with listening to people’s complicated health problems
  • Ability to problem solve
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; experience in public speaking a plus
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Ability to travel to Biddeford and/or Sanford, ME health centers
  • Must show up on time and as scheduled

Certified Application Counselor Volunteers are required to make a minimum commitment of 4 hours a week for at least 6 months.
