The Refugee and Immigrant Children's Program serves refugee and immigrant youth who are resettling alone in the United States. They have left behind war, persecution or instability that separated them from their families. Through our program, children are welcomed by foster families who have made a long-term commitment to their care. We serve children, primarily teenagers, from countries throughout Asia, Africa and Central America.

We are seeking tutors throughout King county who can provide educational support for these youth. We are currently looking for tutors to begin working with youth in September, but we also have a need for immediate help in the Kent area with English and general skills. Tutors are needed to begin in September for the following subjects and locations: History, Science, & English - Kent/Covington; and English, Math, & Science - Renton, Burien, or Tukwila.

- Help youth with high school homework in various subjects

- Help youth practice reading, writing, and speaking English

- Assist with Senior Projects, essay writing, and college or scholarship applications

We ask tutors to commit to at least one year of service meeting weekly with youth. Tutors also must be at least 21 or over.

Mission Statement

Lutheran Community Services Northwest partners with individuals, families and communities for health, justice and hope.

Description

Since 1980, Refugees Northwest Foster Care (a program of Lutheran Community Services Northwest) has served children, primarily teenagers, from all over the world through our unaccompanied minor foster care program (known today as Refugees Northwest Foster Care). These children have come to the United States without families as 'unaccompanied minor’ refugees or asylum seekers. They have left behind war, persecution or instability that separated them from their families.

The United States is the only country with a specialized program that provides homes and services to unaccompanied refugee and immigrant minors. Here in Seattle we are one of the longest-running such programs and our decades of experience and expertise are reflected in the quality of services we provide.

The program continues to support dozens of children and their foster families each year. The need has never been greater. In recent years we have seen a dramatic increase in the number of refugee and immigrant children in need of families to call their own.
