BuildaBridge is seeking established and emerging (student) culinary artists, chefs & caterers willing to participate in a charitable cause while gaining exposure for their work or business. BuildaBridge needs 10-15 culinary artist volunteers to prepare one or two heavy hors d'oeuvres for its second annual signature gala event, The Hopeful City , to take place on November 8, 2014 in Philadelphia at WHYY studios. Each food item will be voted on by guests at the gala, with a cash prize awarded to the top culinary entry(ies). Each artist should prepare enough of their food item for 100 people.

BuildaBridge is also in need of a volunteer willing to provide a coffee station service.

All Culinary/Catering Artists will receive recognition in the printed program and on the BuildaBridge website with links to the Artists’ professional web pages. Documentation of in-kind contributions for tax purposes can be provided. The event will afford opportunities for promotion of your business or craft and visibility to approximately 300 attendees including many of Philadelphia’s political, religious, social service, education, corporate, arts and sports leaders, as well as a chance to meet the leaders of our city.

Mission Statement

BuildaBridge is a nonprofit arts education and intervention organization that engages creative people and the transformative power of the arts to bring hope and healing to children, families and communities in the tough places of the world. BuildaBridge spans barriers of race, class, faith and culture to promote holistic personal, family and community development. Committed to principles of love, compassion, justice, reconciliation and service to others, BuildaBridge motivates, enlists, trains and connects those with artistic gifts with those in greatest need. BuildaBridge offers unique programs featuring cross-cultural perspectives and arts-integrated approaches that are child-centered, trauma-informed and hope-infused.

Description

BuildaBridge Community provides arts-integrated intervention and education to children and families in under-served communities. In collaboration with local schools, community centers, transitional homes, and religious congregations in Philadelphia, BuildaBridge Community delivers creative arts educational experiences, and therapeutic intervention through art-making in music, drama, dance, creative writing, and the visual arts as metaphor to teach life, social, character and academic skills.

Our primary goals for our Philadelphia programs are to provide children & youth with:

  1. the critical elements needed for healing from trauma due to violence & abuse in order to break the cycle violence;
  2. experiences that foster healthy development & hope for their future;
  3. experiences that develop academic, social, artistic-expressive skills and that foster character development;
  4. experiences that allow development & rehearsal of skills for living as responsible, contributing and empathetic citizens.

Committed to principles of love, compassion, justice, reconciliation and service to others, BuildaBridge offers unique programs featuring cross-cultural perspectives and arts-integrated approaches that are child-centered, trauma-informed and hope-infused.

BuildaBridge’s main constituency in Philadelphia consists of low-income African-American and Latino children, ages 7-14 who live in homeless shelters and transitional housing. BuildaBridge also works with the out-of shelter "homeless" children living under informal extended family and guardianship arrangements. Almost all of BuildaBridge’s constituency is living below the poverty level. They are at risk of withdrawing from school and/or engaging in risky behaviors. Regarding the living environments for much of our constituency, data on community demographics indicate the total & personal crime, robbery, assault and burglary risk rates are 200 to 600 times the national average for zipcodes 19144, 41, 38, 29 and 19.

BuildaBridge serves approximately 350-400 different youth annually in the city of Philadelphia through our Community Programs:

Discovery, Artology, Healing and the new Philadelphia Refugee Mental Health Collaborative
