Be part of Kentucky USGBC's Green Apple Day of Service and help students, teachers, and parents across Kentucky. Your volunteer service helps Kentucky USGBC in our mission to transform schools into healthy, safe, cost-efficient and productive learning places.

From Teacher Julie Jones:

"Russell Cave Elementary is a charming school on the outskirts of Lexington. We are minutes away from New Circle Road but our horse farm surroundings make it feel like a country school. Our building was renovated several years ago and it was at that time I had a vision to create a garden, a space where teachers could bring classes to learn, feel inspired, and play.

We currently have 8 raised beds as well as a bird and butterfly garden. We are now working on a pollinator garden in the courtyard area of our space. This garden will be used for teaching purposes with all classrooms in our building.

  • Last year we brought in soil and compost material to create several raised berms.
  • This year we installed a limestone path around the berms.
  • We've been slowly adding in plants (native as much as possible) as we raise funds or receive donations.
  • Our next step is to place a medium to large size river rock mixture around the perimeter of that space.
Now we need volunteers to plant native plant plugs, spread mulch and help tidy up afterwards.

We appreciate the opportunity to work with groups and/or individuals with a shared passion for showing our youngest students the beauty and importance of our natural world."

The USGBC Green Apple Day of Service will bring together thousands of students, teachers, parents and community leaders from around the globe to improve our school environments through service projects, education, community events and more. Our vast network of champions will demonstrate the strength and breadth of our movement, leaving a meaningful and lasting local impact on our world’s schools.
