YMCA READS!
Giving children the courage to READ!

What is the YMCA READS! Program?

The Central Florida YMCA, along with the Governor's Mentoring Initiative and community volunteers, have joined together to create an after-school mentoring and literacy program for students in kindergarten through third grade. Each session emphasizes reading and comprehensive skill development. This mentoring program matches volunteers with students who are eager to emerge as readers. Our curriculum's focus is literacy and character development. Each student/mentor session will abide by the YMCA core values of caring, responsibility, honesty, respect and faith.

WHY MENTOR A CHILD?

The connection a child makes with caring adults early in life has profound effects on his/her life and our community's future. Research has shown that young people who are involved with a caring adult are: 46% less likely to use drugs 52% less likely to skip school 32% less likely to hit another child Help the future of our community today by investing time in our children. Be a child's tutor, friend and key to a brighter tomorrow .

DO YOU HAVE 1 OR 2 HOURS A WEEK TO HELP A CHILD READ? YMCA READS! Mentors generally become key factors in improving a child's academic performance and self esteem. In parallel, the YMCA READS! Mentor can earn community and academic service hours for themselves while receiving valuable training in an educational setting. For a YMCA READS! Mentor, our challenge is not to just make a difference but to be a difference in a child's reading and esteem development.
