Help kids transitioning out of homelessness succeed in school!

Goal of Position: Kids transitioning out of homelessness face many challenges: poverty, lack of connections in their new community, uncertainty about their future housing. Many are also refugees and are adjusting to their new surroundings. But the one challenge our young residents should be able to focus most on is academic success to make their futures bright.

Schedule: This opportunity is available throughout the school year.

  • We are looking for an energetic youth leader to facilitate enrichment activities and games on Mondays from 4-6pm.
  • We are also looking for high quality homework tutors to support academic studies on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-6pm.

If you think you are the right first please complete our volunteer application today and check the box for "Youth Development"

About Low Income Housing Institute

Location:

2407 First Ave,, Seattle, WA 98121, US

Mission Statement

The Low Income Housing Institute develops, owns and operates housing for the benefit of low-income, homeless and formerly homeless people in Washington state; advocates for just housing policies at the local and national levels; and administers a range of supportive service programs to assist those we serve in maintaining stable housing and increasing their self-sufficiency.

Description

LIHI develops and provides affordable housing to 4,000+ low income, homeless and formerly homeless people, including families. In 2019, an estimated 11,199 people experienced homelessness in King County alone. Many of LIHI housing projects focus on transitioning families and individuals out of homelessness, including chronically homeless populations. Most of the units developed by LIHI are occupied by formerly homeless households.

LIHI assists our residents with services that help them maintain stable housing and prevent them from becoming homeless again (e.g. through improving resident income and/or education status, dealing with long standing mental and physical health conditions) and increase self-sufficiency.

We also help homeless individuals and families remain healthy & employed: LIHI operates the Urban Rest Stop - an innovative hygiene center for the homeless located in downtown Seattle; a safe, clean and dignified place where as many as 500 homeless individuals, families, elders and youth access restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities each day. This center is open seven days a week, with extended hours specifically designed to assist homeless persons who are working or seeking employment. 60% of URS patrons have steady employment, but can't earn enough income to afford the rent.
