In-Home Hospice volunteers are needed to serve as an integral aspect of our Hospice Team. Our in-home volunteers (including assisted living facilities), visit hospice patients/families once or twice a week. Visits generally last 2 hours and are arranged according to the availability of the volunteer and the need of the patient. In addition to being a peaceful presence, volunteers have the opportunity to bring fun and laughter into homes. Volunteers assist with developing photo albums and other memorability projects, writing books, documenting life achievements and videotaping special events with the patient. Volunteers are encouraged to support the patient and family in ways that fit individual personalities, such as reading or reciting poetry, playing an instrument or CDs of preferred music and singing.

Mission Statement

Founded in 1888 as The Home for The Incurables, our nonprofit, charitable organization pioneered the concept of comfort care for chronically and terminally ill people in the Washington DC area.

Description

The Washington Home & Community Hospices, located in Northwest Washington, D.C. and Beltisville, MD, strives to ensure that every hospice patient receives the best in care and support. Volunteers serve in a variety of roles at Community Hospices: providing companionship to patients and their loved ones in home settings and assisted living facilities; supporting the organization in a variety of ways in clerical positions in both our Washington office and our Calverton office in Maryland, or working on projects with our Development Department. Volunteer visits, which range from weekly visits to drop in support, are scheduled according to the need of the patient and the availability of the volunteer.
