ORGANIZATION: Georgetown Ministry Center

  • 16 people are interested

Georgetown Ministry Center is a day center for homeless individuals that provides showers, laundry, mail, internet and telephone use, housing referrals, and medical assistance. We are looking for volunteers who want to help make the lives of the most destitute homeless a little more cheerful. Volunteers will check guests in, manage showers and laundry, and assist with set-up and cleanup. They will also lend a listening ear to guests, overall helping to maintain a comfortable atmosphere at our center. Volunteers should be comfortable with diversity, a variety of psychiatric conditions, and occasional conflict.

About Georgetown Ministry Center

Location:

1041 WISCONSIN AVE NW, WASHINGTON, DC 20007, US

Mission Statement

Georgetown Ministry Center guides service-resistant, chronically homeless individuals towards stability and housing through aggressive street outreach, providing a safe and welcoming environment in our center where everyone is treated with respect, and educating our community about homelessness. We seek lasting solutions to homelessness one person at a time.

Description

Georgetown Ministry Center operates a day outreach center based off a clubhouse model of rehabilitation and offers counseling and information services; showers and laundry; a computer lab; psychiatric and medical care; and a place to simply belong. We are open every day from 8am-4pm. A consulting psychiatrist and a medical doctor from Unity Health Care come once a week to see patients in our center, as well as conduct street outreach to those who are the most vulnerable. During the winter months (November-March), GMC operates a small, congressional-based shelter seven days a week, from 7:00PM to 7:00AM.
