Research shows that strong reading skills help students to be most successful in school and in life. Students who are reading at grade level by the 3 rd grade are four times more likely to stay in school. Today, many students in Seattle struggle to reach grade level standards in reading. This is a reality that often creates an achievement gap in our community.

The City of Seattle and Northgate Elementary have partnered to respond to this need by designing Northgate READS and COUNTS, an academic and enrichment program that provides tailored support for 2 nd through 5 th graders in an interactive, creative learning environment.

Volunteers play a key role in the success of the program by working alongside certificated teachers as they support the academic growth of each child. Reading Coaches help 2 nd and 3 rd grade students to develop reading comprehension and fluency skills. Math Coaches work with 4 th and 5 th graders to improve fundamental math skills.

Responsibilities:

As a Reading Coach or Math Coach you will:

  • Lead small group activities with 2 nd and 3 rd graders to reinforce comprehension, vocabulary, and letter/sound skills covered by instructors.
  • Work with students one-on-one to practice reading fluency and comprehension.
  • Lead math games and activities with small groups of 4 th and 5 th graders.
  • Work with students one-on-one to practice skills taught by certificated teachers.

Time Commitment:

  • Volunteers need to commit to at least one Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday per week for an entire session.
  • Program runs on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday afternoons from 2:45-6PM.**
  • Spring session runs from March 16th - June 11th.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Must be consistent, flexible, and patient.
  • Able to read fluently and with comprehension.
