ORGANIZATION: Drueding Center

Overview: Drueding Center, a transitional housing program for homeless women with children, needs evening volunteer tutors. Being uprooted and moved to several schools in a short amount of time can be disorienting for our children, and can have a negative impact on their academic success. Tutoring is an essential part of filling in the gaps, and ensuring that our kids are functioning at their grade level and beyond. See how rewarding making such a strong impact on a child’s future can be. Two different positions are available:

Homework Club

  • Group Tutoring in the 3 rd floor Library in our Residential building
  • Enjoy working with different ages and meet other volunteers
  • Once a week, but come as often as you’d like, choose from Monday and Tuesday from 6:30pm-7:30pm.
  • Minimum 1 month commitment

Homework Helpers

  • Private tutoring session with one child, in the study lounges Residential building
  • Pick your pre-arranged weekly appointment, Wednesday and Thursday from 6:30pm-7:30pm
  • Form a meaningful bond with a child in need of a mentor
  • Minimum 3 month commitment

Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Willing to support the mission of the agency
  • Volunteer must be willing to make a commitment of at least 1-3 months (depending on position)
  • Volunteers must pass a criminal background check & provide Child abuse clearances (OR) FBI background check
  • Desirable, but not required: Bring special skills like mathematics, composition, or creativity for projects

Responsibilities:

  • Assist a child/children age/s 6-12 (majority are grades K-3) complete Homework and Projects

Mission Statement

The mission of the Drueding Center, as an integral part of the Holy Redeemer Health System, is to "Care Comfort and Heal." The Statement of Purpose developed by the management and staff of Drueding Center states: "We must ensure that all of our families have the skills and resources necessary to live independently and reach their individual measures of success."

Description

The Sisters of the Holy Redeemer established Drueding Center in 1987 to provide transitional housing services for homeless women and their children. To date, more than 550 women with 1200 children have benefited from our services. Drueding Center (DC) provides its residents with a comprehensive schedule of on-site services including: intensive case management, life skills training, assistance in finding permanent and secure housing, full-day licensed Childcare with Head Start services and an After School program, Clinical Counseling programs for children and mothers, and Education and Employment services through our adult and child learning centers, including a Youth Services Program for children ages 8-13 and an on-site health clinic. After Care services are provided for any former residents (graduate families) of Drueding Center up to 7 years post residence at our facility.
