What is Breakthrough San Francisco? Breakthrough San Francisco is a member of Breakthrough Collaborative, a national education nonprofit that launches motivated middle school students with limited educational opportunities on the road to college and encourages young people to pursue careers in education. We are looking for adults, college students, and high school students to volunteer after school with academically motivated 5 th-8 th grade students from underserved communities around San Francisco. All programming takes place at San Francisco Day School (350 Masonic Avenue at Golden Gate Avenue). Our students are motivated, enthusiastic, visionary, and talented. What will volunteers be doing? We are looking for tutors/teachers to work with enthusiastic 5th-8th graders through our comprehensive, tuition-free after-school program that promotes academic excellence, youth leadership, and intellectual growth for students from underserved communities around San Francisco. What is the time commitment? The commitment is one afternoon per week (Mon from 3:30pm-5:30pm, Tue from 4:00pm-6:00pm, Wed from 3:30pm-5:30pm, or Thu from 4:00pm-6:00pm), from the week of Feb 2 to the week of Apr 27. During the first hour, volunteers provide tutoring to 1-3 Breakthrough students; tutors are matched with particular students for the duration of the semester to allow for consistency and relationship building. During the second hour, volunteers in high school or older can continue tutoring. Or, on Mondays and Wednesdays only, they can teach an academic or elective class of 5-10 students. Please note that the number of teaching positions is limited, and that those opting to teach are expected to spend time outside of Breakthrough preparing lesson plans. All volunteers will be required to attend a mandatory training on Wednesday, January 28 from 5:00pm-8:00pm. Teachers will be required to attend an additional training on Thursday, January 29 from 5:00pm-8:00pm.
