LearningWorks AmeriCorps AIMS HIGH program is seeking Minimum-Time AmeriCorps members for the 2014-2015 School Year!

LearningWorks is seeking AmeriCorps Members across the state of Maine to serve locally in their own communities as part of the LearningWorks-AmeriCorps AIMS HIGH program. AmeriCorps is a national service program that engages Americans of all ages and backgrounds in solving community problems. The AIMS HIGH Program supports students and promotes academic achievement at five schools in Maine - Riverton Elementary and East End Community Schools in Portland, Carrabec High School in North Anson, Spruce Mountain High School in Jay, and Sumner Memorial High School in Sullivan. This posting is for recruitment of new Minimum-Time Members to at Riverton Elementary in Portland, ME.

Minimum-Time AmeriCorps Members complete a minimum of 300 hours of service in a school over the course of a year. As an AmeriCorps member you will serve together with a team of other committed members and a LearningWorks Site Coordinator to support teachers, and school administrators by providing student support, enrichment, mentoring, tutoring, and developing community service programs in and outside of schools.

Serving as an AmeriCorps member is a great opportunity to apply your energy, ideals, and skills toward helping others and meeting student needs in your community. As an AmeriCorps member you will gain hands-on experience working with youth in an educational setting, develop your leadership capacity, and learn skills and responsibilities that will be valuable in your own career. Over the course of service, LearningWorks-AmeriCorps AIMS HIGH members receive training for working with youth, educational skills, best practices in schools and ongoing guidance for impacting student achievement, including how to cultivate a culture of community citizenship and service.

After successfully completing 300 hours of service, Minimum-Time AmeriCorps members will receive a $100 honorarium, and receive an education award of $1,195 to be put toward future educational opportunities or qualified student loan debt. What LW-AmeriCorps AIMS HIGH members do:

One on one student mentoring.

Tutoring students in English, Math and other subjects in school.

Online video tutoring for students after school.

Lead credit recovery programs in school to help high school students who have fallen behind to graduate.

Lead in-school writing workshops for students.

Lead reading programs for elementary schools students.

Provide in-classroom support to teachers and students

Lead service learning projects and community service with students, such as community gardens and healthy food initiatives at schools.

Support activities at afterschool programs.

Recruit other community volunteers to invest in school success.

Build partnership with local community leaders and organizations.

Position Requirements:

Self motivated with a high degree of flexibility.

Clear, concise oral and written communication.

Comfort and ability working with youth and diverse populations.

Ability to manage time, set priorities, plan & implement projects.

As desire to impact the lives of students!

Must be at least 17 years of age or older.

Must have a high school diploma or its equivalent, or be working towards one to be completed by August 2015
