If you enjoy being outdoors, getting your hands dirty, and spending time in garden spaces, consider becoming a Grow Portland Garden Steward in 2015.
WHAT YOU WILL DO: Grow Portland currently manages seven urban gardens and farms. We are seeking volunteers who will steward a garden by helping to keep these spaces beautiful, safe and productive. The Garden Steward will assist Grow Portland staff, participants and Lead Gardeners with site upkeep. Volunteer tasks could include: weeding edges or rows, planting/maintaining front native plant areas, spreading wood mulch, maintaining compost areas, and organizing the onsite tool shed. We welcome anyone to apply: no garden experience is necessary, and volunteers will be trained. Volunteers can choose work times that fits within their work schedule. We ask that volunteers commit to at least 4 hours per month from March-November.
LOCATIONS: We offer two growing approaches. Our community gardens provide plots 15’x15’ to 60’x60’ for families to grow their own produce. Community farming is our new program where members grow food collaboratively and work under the instruction of an experienced farmer-educator. The five sites where we are seeking volunteers are:
- 139th Avenue Farm and Garden at SE 139th Ave, just north of Stark St.
- Cesar Chavez Community Garden at SE Cesar Chavez and Ellis Street.
- East County Community Garden at 24375 SE Stark.
- Eastminster Community Garden at NE 125th and Halsey.
- Neighborhoods Garden, 835 SE 162nd Ave, a project of Outgrowing Hunger in partnership with Grow Portland.
