Community heart

The Chicago Community Garden Association will be hosting a number of Garden workdays across the city this fall. The CCGA is a group of community partners coming together to share ideas, plants and people power to transform and improve our city. The Chicago Fun Volunteers have been invited to give our love and sweat to care for the plants and garden space. This is a wonderful opportunity for our volunteers to come together to work along side local residents to beautify our city and feed our communities. Come discover and explore new neighborhoods and make new friends in areas that are outside your normal comfort zone.

Our first stop in this adventure will be the Hermitage Street Community Garden, at 5641 S. Hermitage, Chicago IL 60636 in the Englewood neighborhood. This is a wonderful big community garden that needs quite a bit of help. We would be weeding and mulching, and maybe a little mowing thrown in. Tools and gloves will be provided, but you are also welcome to bring your own favorite gardening tools/gears to use if you like. The workday will be led by 4 or 5 experienced community gardeners. Our workday time is 9 am to noon, Saturday, Sept 6th. Afterwards, volunteers will have the option to go out to eat and chat at a local restaurant near by. This will enhance our understanding of people and neighborhood we serve and support the local economy. It is also a fun and social way to bond new friendships with your fellow volunteers and share new volunteer events with each other.

What you should wear: Bring your big hat, sun screens, comfortable clothes and shoes/boots you don't mind getting dirty. Bring a couple bottles of water or other liquid to stay hydrated. If you have your own gardening gloves, or small gardening tools, bring those as well as the site may not have enough for all the volunteers.

The Hermitage Street Community Garden was started by Cordia Pugh and a group of 20 residents in 2011 that joined together because they wanted to grow food in their community, in an otherwise food dessert.
