Lenox Hill Neighborhood House, widely recognized as one of New York's premier human services providers, is a 120-year-old settlement house that provides an extensive array of effective and integrated services--social, educational, legal, health, housing, mental health, nutritional and fitness--which significantly improve the lives of 20,000 people in need each year, ages 3 to 103, on the East Side of Manhattan. Our clients include older adults, homeless and formerly homeless adults, children and families, recent immigrants, disabled persons and more. Reporting to our DIrector of Health and Wellness Initiatives, the Intern will have a unique opportunity to participate in our holistic practice nad will gain both policy and client-related experience, focusing on health care matters including the Affordable Care Act, the health insurance Marketplace, and Medicare and Medicaid health insurance programs. The intern will have the opportunity to conduct research on health care related issues that affect low-income New Yorkers, attend city-wide coalition meetings, assist with client interviews, help screen clients for government benefits and assist with benefit applications, and research available health care resources for low-income New Yorkers.
We are looking for an undergraduate or graduate student who can intern 12-15 hours per week. Applicants should have a commitment to public service as well as excellent oral and written skills. Description
Lenox Hill Neighborhood House was founded in 1894 by the Alumnae Association of Normal College (now known as Hunter College of the City University of New York) as a free kindergarten for the children of indigent immigrants. Since then, we have remained at the forefront of community advocacy and social and educational change.
