ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES: Health screening clinic volunteers do medical intakes and simple lab tests (blood sugar tests, urinalysis, pregnancy tests) with patients, follow doctor's instructions to give patients referrals to nearby clinics and Highland Hospital and enter patient information into our medical record system. Volunteers work with a diverse population of patients. They are mostly Latino or Mongolian, are low-wage workers or unemployed individuals primarily, often have limited to no literacy, and are typically unfamiliar with the U.S. healthcare system. Working with patients requires thinking holistically about health (i.e. not just in a clinical context but also in a sociocultural context).

RECOMMENDED & REQUIRED SKILLS: Volunteers MUST speak Spanish fluently. No experience in a clinical environment is necessary, we will train you. *Experience working in immigrant communities and cultural humility are very valuable.*

SCHEDULE: Monday 10am-4pm (with the possibility that clinic can run as late as 5:00pm, depending on flow of patients). Applications are considered ONLY if the applicant can commit to the entire shift each week for a minimum of 6 months and is fluent in Spanish.

GETTING TO SLHP: 10 minute walk from the Fruitvale BART station, and is on the AC Transit 1R bus route that travels from Berkeley, down Telegraph to downtown Oakland, and then down International Blvd and to San Leandro.

ABOUT SLHP: Street Level Health Project (SLHP) is an Oakland-based nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the health and well-being of underserved, urban immigrant communities in the Bay Area. SLHP is "a safety net of the safety net" and serves as a point of entry to accessing health and other services for those most often overlooked and neglected, namely the uninsured, underinsured and recently arrived. We develop trusting relationships with new immigrants, offer them a place to build a healthy and vibrant community, and empower them to advocate for the wellbeing of themselves and their families.

Mission Statement

Street Level Health Project is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the health and well-being of underserved urban immigrant communities in the Bay Area. Our organization is an entry point to the health care system for those most often overlooked and neglected, namely the
uninsured, underinsured, and recently arrived.

Street Level Health Project's model for closing the gap in health care access for low-income, recently immigrated communities is three-fold: 1) bringing health care to the community through our Health Access Program; 2) tightening the link between individuals and community health clinics through our Navigator Empowerment Program; and 3) addressing the root causes of poor health by strengthening and empowering individuals and communities to be healthy through our Health Education and Leadership Program.

SLHP develops trusting relationships with new immigrants, offers them a place to build a healthy and vibrant community, and empowers them to advocate for the well-being of themselves and their families.

Description

Health Screening Clinic

Street Level's free health screening clinic is open to all low-wage workers who do not have health insurance. We offer basic diagnostic and treatment services, as well as referral and case management services. Our services are available without regard to ethnicity, race, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, immigration status or ability to pay.

Referrals and Health Navigation

Street Level provides free assistance to
clients in need of help navigating the local systems and services available for healthcare, legal, mental health, housing, food and others. We maintain an up-to-date registry of referrals for specialty healthcare needs, dental, eye care, shelters and more, and we work to support clients in obtaining the care they need.

Counseling

Individuals are provided with a safe space to share their experiences, and a counselor can help them to create a plan to address issues in their lives. Many clients are referred to SLHP's Mental Health Workshops for further support.

Counselors also help clients navigate the healthcare and community service system to secure specialized services like addiction treatment or support groups.
