Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ventura County (BBSVC) is seeking Lunch Buddies in the Ventura and Oxnard areas for the 2015-2016 school year.

As a Lunch Buddy, mentors are "matched" with a 3rd or 4th grade child at their choice of Montalvo Elementary (Ventura) or Chavez Elementary (Oxnard) schools. Throughout the school year, these Bigs and Littles will spend one-to-one time together once a week during lunch on the day that best fits their schedule.

Children in the Lunch Buddies program are looking for someone to offer a little extra friendship and support. The positive presence of Lunch Buddies at the elementary school sites shows Littles the importance of placing a value on education as well as helping them to feel more comfortable in school. Lunch Buddies read together, play board games, have fun at recess, or just catch up.

Lunch Buddies only have to be 18 years old - high school and college students are welcome to apply to be mentors in the program. A site-based mentoring specialist from BBSVC is at the schools for assistance and support during each Lunch Buddies session.

(Please note: in order to provide our Littles with a full, substantial match, we try to recruit Lunch Buddies as early in the school year as possible - if you are interested, please contact us to get started so we can introduce you to your Little as soon as the next school year begins!)

Mission Statement

Our vision is for all children to achieve success in school, work, and life. Our mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better. Our goal is to provide a mentor for every child who needs or wants one. Currently, there are over 100 Littles waiting for their perfect Bigs.

Description

Big Brothers Big Sisters matches caring adults with children who spend time on a consistant basis on activities that they both enjoy. They read together, play board games or just talk. Children benefit; adults feel like a kid again.

Big Brothers Big Sisters provides opportunities for volunteers of all ages to be friends to children who need extra time and attention to succeed in school and with family and peers. Volunteers 18 and older are needed to be school-based mentors to children whose teachers have referred them for individualized one-on-one concentrated time. Typically, 2 hours each week talking about what is on the child's mind, reading the newspaper together or puzzling over a class assignment, has a positive impact on the child's attitude about school and academic achievement, while putting a little fun and extra meaning into the volunteer's day and week. Volunteers enroll through Big Brothers Big Sisters and following an interview, references and a background check, are oriented to their local school or community and introduced to a little brother or little sister by BBBS staff. Regular support is available to assure that the relationship builds over time, and any logistical problems are resolved. Teachers report that children with Bigs have an improved attitude about school, better relationships with peer and adults, and improved academic performance.
