ORGANIZATION: East Harlem Tutorial Program

East Harlem Tutorial Program offers a variety of volunteer opportunities through our public charter schools, after-school, and summer programs. The programs range from subject-matter tutoring, providing students with homework help, mentoring, and preparing high school students for college success. Volunteers support our scholars, prepare them for academic success, encourage their social enrichment, and help them gain the confidence they will need to succeed in college and in life. Check out our volunteer options below:

Out of School Time (OST) Programs

Classroom Buddies - Volunteers work in one of our Kindergarten through 5th Grade after-school classes assisting our scholars with homework, walking them through engaging classroom activities, and supporting our Assistant and Lead Teachers.

Commitment : Twice a week

When : Monday through Thursday, 4 p.m. - 6 p.m.

Elementary Homework Help - Volunteers support our young scholars as they tackle tough homework while building supportive relationships and positively impacting their academic achievement. In small groups, volunteers address the individual needs of our scholars and focus on content they are learning during the week.

Commitment : Once a week

When : Saturdays, 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. (Oct - Jan only)


Road to Success - Middle School years are some of the most formative for any student. This time will determine which high school they get into, which will ultimately be a key factor in whether they go to college. Road to Success provides a small group setting where scholars receive homework help from volunteers interested in making a difference in the lives of young people.

Commitment : Once a week

When : Monday through Thursday, 5 p.m. - 6 p.m.


Circle Up Tutoring (formerly known as University Tutoring) - Volunteers help our middle and high school scholars succeed in various subjects (Math, English, Science, History), while in a one-on-one setting. Volunteers should feel confident tutoring and demonstrate success in a 6th - 12th grade level subject.

Commitment : Once a week

When : Monday and Thursday, 6:30 p.m. - 8 p.m.

East Harlem Scholars Academies

Scholars After School Clubs - Do you enjoy soccer, flag football, dance or fencing? Are you a homework whiz? Come support our elementary and middle school scholars, engaging them in fun clubs geared towards being active and expressing themselves creatively! Volunteers can choose which club, sport, or activity to participate in.

  • CLASSROOM/TEACHING AIDE
    • Provide logistical support: signing in students, submitting attendance to program director, handing out snack, and other tasks as needed
    • Classroom management support: assisting students with small group work/projects, ensuring materials are available for all students, implement strategies created by in-classroom teacher, etc.
    • Aid after school staff with student dismissal and sign out
  • SPORTS AIDE (Experience in sports related activities a plus!)
    • Provide logistical support: signing in students, submitting attendance to program director, handing out snack, and other tasks as needed
    • Aid coaches with practices, including: drills, running plays, stretches, and one on one assistance for students.
    • Aid after school staff with student dismissal and sign out

Commitment : Once a week

When : Monday through Thursday, 4 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.; Fridays, 12:45 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.


Lunch & Playground Pals

  • Support with preparing elementary student lunches and providing general lunchroom support including escorting scholars between lunchroom and bathrooms, as well as lunchroom clean up
  • Engage with elementary school scholars at tables in friendly conversations and help create a positive lunchroom culture
  • Support recess time by providing a structured activities such as basketball, tag, or relay races (volunteer suggestions are always welcomed!)
  • In addition to the responsibilities above, volunteers support with early dismissal and running an enrichment club in the late pick-up room on Fridays

Commitment : Once a week

When : Mondays - Thursdays,10 a.m. - 12 p.m.; Fridays, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Reading Buddies

  • Support during after school reading clubs in structured reading comprehension skill building activities
  • Volunteers work through activities with their assigned elementary scholar weekly under the supervision of a reading specialist

Commitment : Once a week

When : Mondays - Thursdays, 4 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.


Saturday Academy - Volunteer support in elementary and middle school classrooms during teacher-led ELA and Math test prep in small group activities for students that need extra support.

Commitment : Once a week

When : Saturdays, 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

EHTP’s mission is to prepare students with the academic skills, strength of character, and emotional well-being to excel in high school and college, lead in their communities, and realize their best possible selves.

Description

EHTP operates out-of-school time programming that provides academic enrichment, college-ready resources and social-emotional support for students in after-school programs for grades K-12 and operates 5 public charter schools known East Harlem Scholars Academies. EHTP would not be the organization that we are today without the help and support from our amazing volunteers. Volunteers empower our scholars, prepare them for academic success, support their social enrichment, and help them gain the confidence they will need to succeed in college and in life.
