We are currently recruiting for an important volunteer role at our satellite facility in San Luis Obispo. The Marine Mammal Center's San Luis Obispo Operations (SLO) rescues animals along the southernmost part of our California rescue range. SLO Volunteers help with a variety of different tasks. SLO Volunteers are responsible for picking up and transporting animals to our sites, often under difficult circumstances. Volunteers also provide triage patient care to sick or injured animals.
Rescue Duties
Much of the rescue work requires special training, but all volunteers can participate in releases and transporting animals. Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Animal Assessment and Monitoring
- Aiding the animals, including administering emergency care
- Transporting animals to one of our triage sites, either the SLO facility or our facility in Monterey
Animal Care Duties
Animal Care Volunteers have the unique opportunity to provide hands on patient care to the marine mammals in our facilities. Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Preparing feeds and feeding animals
- Updating patient charts
- Cleaning pens
- Drawing up and administering basic medications (after appropriate training)
Volunteers may also assist with public outreach and education programs.
