What time is it? It's BACK TO SCHOOL TIME!
Masa is seeking dedicated volunteers to provide tutoring and homework helpto elementary- and middle-school students at its South Bronx community center, easily accessible by the 2 and 5 trains at the 149th Street-3rd Avenue station (just 2-3 stops into the Bronx).
The community center's after-school program will operate on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 6 PM - 8 PM. At the program, students primarily receive homework help and develop their reading skills. They also have opportunities to participate in art, music, and other enrichment activities.
Masa's school year program will begin on Monday, September 8th, 2014 and runs through June 12, 2014.
To learn more about the educational needs of New York City's Mexican community, check out Kirk Semple's recent article in the New York Times, "In New York, Mexicans Lag in Education." Angelo Cabrera and Dr. Robert Smith - both members of Masa's board - were both interviewed for the piece.
