Close to 50% of the Marshall High School student population reads below a 6th grade reading level. To combat this problem, certified teachers who have a history at the school are starting a reading intervention program in the 2014-15 school year.

The reading intervention program will be for the Sophomores and Juniors at Marshall who read below a fourth-grade level. There will be around 45 students in the program, and it will only run in the morning from 8 am to 12 pm. Students will receive an hour of direct reading instruction by certified teachers each day, and will also work in centers in a flexible learning space. The goal is to give students the one-on-one and small-group reading instruction that they need, while also providing a space that they enjoy, where they can take ownership of their learning.

We need volunteers to help us run a writing center within the space. During the time that students are not recieving reading instruction, students will have the opportunity to visit the writing center where volunteers would be ready to meet one-on-one or in small groups with students. Volunteers would be overseen by a certified teacher who would simultaneously be delivering instruction to other students within the space.
