Ventura County Patient Visitors Needed--Bring Comfort and Caring

ORGANIZATION: ProCare Hospice Mission Hills

This is a position that is emotionally demanding, but will make a huge difference in the lives of the seniors you serve. Hospice is highly regulated so getting through the hoops is the hardest part!

Hospice patients need people to love them, hold their hands, reassure them, and treat them like normal human beings, even when they are so sick. Often their family members abandon them. They see the same walls every day. Your presence means more than they can tell you. You will also be interacting with families who may be demanding, sorrowing or in crisis mode.

Here are some requirements...you ...are over 18 ....have not experienced a death of someone close to you in the last year ...are able to pass a background check ...optimally speak some English for the training (Some training materials are available in Spanish.) ...are able to pass a TB skin test (to test for tuberculosis) ...are able to work alone with little supervision ...have your own transportation ...are willing to drive to homes within Ventura County ...are a good listener and are willing to serve everyone ...can give at least two hours of volunteer time per week for at least six months ...are able to work with a variety of patients--demanding, controlling, pleasant, confused, etc, even those who do not talk or may become angry with you. Sometimes you may even feel you are doing no good. ...are willing to report to the Hospice team about your visit, fill out paperwork, and get your paperwork in on time.

You will be making such a difference in the lives of those you touch!

Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide comfort care for individuals and their loved ones who are facing a life-limiting illness. Our quality care creates an atmosphere that supports comfort, compassion and dignity, which continues through the bereavement for the family.

Description

ProCare Hospice is committed to improving the quality of life for individuals experiencing a life-limiting illness.

ProCare Hospice provides services meeting the needs of patients and their families during this critical time, when every moment is special.

Our services include, but are not limited to:

  • Pain control and symptom management.

  • Support and the assurance that patients and family members are not alone. Fear, loneliness, anxiety, worry and feelings of helplessness may send a family into despair...Hospice can prevent or relieve some of that despair.

  • When curative care is no longer appropriate, our Hospice program enables a terminally ill person to decide how and where the rest of his or her life should be lived. Hospice care or palliative care focuses on comfort and quality of life.

  • Being in control keeps spirits up so that a person can make the most of each day and concentrate on living.

Persons with a life-limiting illness receive benefits from ProCare Hospice that are not available in a traditional health care setting of curative care.
