The Y READS! Program seeks to close the gap in students’ reading performance and the State of Florida’s reading performance expectations. It’s is an excellent volunteer opportunity because it allows the volunteer to have a positive involvement in a child’s life, have a practical and enriching experience working with at risk children, and will provide the volunteer with an educator experience in a diverse and high need community.
In order to be a good candidate for this position you must like working with young children, have patience and good communication skills. Students enrolled in this program meet with their tutor 2 times per week and the mentors follow a written lesson plan (SIPPS) which assists the child in learning how to read. The children and tutors are continuously supervised by a YMCA staff person and must pass a background screening in order to work with students.
Reading activities are broken down into roughly 20 minute intervals during the session and class focuses on letter-to-sound correlation and the basic phonics of learning how to put together letters to form words. Tutoring and Training takes place at Montclair Elementary on a quarterly basis (on the job and more often if needed). This program runs during the entire academic school year and throughout the month of June. Tutors are welcome to join at any time during the year.
