ORGANIZATION: DuCAP: Providing Positive Choices for Youth & Families

We are looking for volunteers to build and cultivate a relationship with an assigned group og youngsters h a variety of STEM activities that promote academic achievement, character development and the prevention of substance use, pre-marital sex and school droput.

a. Set Goals: The mentor will work with the students 1 day a week for 2 hours to help develop interests in science, technology, engineering and math in order to promote long range goals for the students' academic and career development.

b. Be a role model: The mentor will be a role model to the student,demonstrating attitudes and qualities of effective mentoring such as punctuality, dependability and trust.

c. Plan and participate in activities: The mentor will plan and implement activities that are given to them in order to help students with STEM based projects. Mentors will help students prepare for STEM based competition and accompany students on any STEM based field trips. These activities will create a sense of belonging.

d. Be a friend: The mentor will have realistic goals and expectations; have fun together; give youth a voice and choice in deciding on activities; be positive; allow students to select discussion topics; listen; respect the trust of the youth places in you; remember your relationship iswith the youth not the youth's parent; and remember you are responsible for building the relationship.

e. Assist with STEM based assisgnments: The mentor will assist with STEM based projects, assist with competition preparation, make suggestions about research and assist the student. Materials and training will be provided by the Youth Hope Director. You don't have to be technical.

f. Encourage students to set goals and stay in school: The mentor will help students appreciate the importance of education, both personally and professionally.

g. Cooperate with staff: The mentor will share with staff areas of concern with volunteers, programs and participants; assist with record keeping and the documentation of program activities; and help monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of programs; and performs all other duties assigned by the in-school Mentor Coordinator or Director.

A one year of commitment is needed.

Fulfills its Mission through the Following Methods:

  • Recruiting and organizing local residents to develop and become involved in the promotion of positive youth development activities;
  • Networking with local agencies and organizations to reinforce community involvement;
  • Providing positive role models and constructive activities in order to mold a safer and more productive community;
  • Identifying community needs and concerns and organizing a Neighborhood Action Club to actively respond to them;
  • Supporting the communities in their efforts to alleviate conditions which put youth at risk;
  • Assisting the Neighborhood Action Club in identifying and utilizing available resources;
  • Serving as an advocate on behalf of the Neighborhood Action Club.
