ORGANIZATION: Multnomah County Library

Share your passion for technology and your bilingual (Spanish/English) language skills with adult library patrons that need basic help with computer and software basics. Empower people by improving their computer skills and their access to information!

Technology Trainers will conduct basic level classes on one or more of the following topics: computer basics, email, Internet, using Facebook, conducting job searches and using an iPad. The volunteer can select which topic they would like to teach based on their interest, skills and experience. Classes are conducted for small groups in a class setting at various library locations. Trainers will follow a prepared curriculum for each class.

Tasks and Responsibilities

Demonstrate and guide adult library patrons through a set of exercises using various computer commands, the Internet and a variety of software relevant to the topic of the class.

Special Skills and Qualifications
  • Be familiar and comfortable with computers

  • Ability to speak and read Spanish fluently

  • Be proficient and up to date with basic computer software and components, the Internet and email

  • Have intermediate knowledge of class content being taught

  • Excellent communication and customer service skills

  • Ability to work independently

  • Ability to be patient and flexible with novice computer users

  • Ability to frequently access email to communicate with library staff

Here are skills that are preferred, but not required:

  • Experience teaching adult learners a plus

  • Experience working with people who have diverse educational, economic and cultural backgrounds

Locations

Must be willing to travel to libraries where the need is greatest.

Spanish speaking technology trainers are needed at the following libraries: Central, Holgate, Kenton, North Portland and/or St. Johns.

Time Commitment

6 month commitment teaching 1-2 classes per month. Each class is 1.5 - 2 hours.

Multnomah County Library is the oldest public library west of the Mississippi River, with a history that reaches back to 1864. As Oregon's largest public library, Multnomah County Library serves nearly one-fifth of the state's population with a wide variety of programs and services.

The mission of the volunteer program is to engage community members in enhancing the services that Multnomah County Library is able to provide online, at library locations, and in the community. Volunteers are engaged throughout the organization including at all of our 19 libraries and our outreach programs.
