Whether you are thinking about entering or currently studying in the medical field, or just want to see what medicine is about, the Emergency Department is the perfect place to volunteer and gain valuable experience (looks great on medical school applications too). The Emergency Department can be a very busy place and you can be of great assistance to the staff by accomplishing tasks that add value to the patient’s experience. Some of these tasks include answering call lights, making ice bags, running errands to other departments, assisting with admissions and dismissals, keeping company with patients that may be alone or scared, and stocking and changing linens in patient rooms. Two individuals can be scheduled to assist in the Emergency Department at the same time, so ask a friend if they would like to volunteer with you.
