Interested in inspiring and educating children on the value of healthy eating habits? Not afraid to get your hands dirty (literally)?

We are seeking passionate volunteers to be the primary instructor for a gardening classes with K-5 students at participating elementary schools in Santa Ana, CA. He/she will teach students the principles of healthy eating and incorporate hands-on activities including planting seeds and seedlings and harvesting fruits and vegetables. Volunteers will work directly with students (kindergarten through fifth grade) and staff in the following capacities:

- Leading planting and harvesting day event activities including planting vegetables, garden maintenance and supplemental garden activities.

- Work closely with classroom teachers to develop and implement lessons that support classroom teaching in a range of curriculum areas (science, social studies, mathematics, language arts, etc.)

- Participate in maintaining garden facilities, caring for equipment, garden weeding, irrigation, pest and disease management, and general gardening tasks.

We are looking for volunteers with great public speaking skills to teach and lead gardening classes of 25-30 elementary age students. Previous gardening experience is not required. Volunteers preferable are able to work with, and relate to, children and adults from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds and is comfortable leading student lessons. Fluent in Spanish speaking and/or knowledge of the Santa Ana community is a plus!

Volunteers must be available during school hours M-F 8am-2pm.

Location: Participating elementary schools located in Santa Ana, CA area

Commitment: Flexible; One-time and/or reoccurring (Dates/Times Vary - weekdays during school hours 9am-2pm)

About the program: Teaching Gardens is a school garden and nutrition program. Students learn how to plant seeds, nurture the growing plants, harvest the food, and ultimately understand the value of good eating habits, good nutritional choices and the importance of physical activity.
