VOLUNTEER BILINGUAL (SPANISH-ENGLISH) IMMIGRATION LEGAL SERVICES ASSOCIATE
Part-time position working 7 hours a week (Wednesday and Friday nights from 3-6.30 PM) in our Trenton Community Center. Will be trained in preparing and filing family and humanitarian immigration applications.
Duties:
Greet and screen first-time applicants to determine eligibility for assistance from the agency
Gather, scan and file documentation
Maintain a follow-up tickler file
Complete application forms
Draft affidavits
Interpret and translate between Spanish and English
Compose simple correspondence
Assist with logistics of legal workshops
Other duties as assigned
Requirements:
Fully conversant in English and Spanish
Ability to translate legal documents from Spanish to English
Prior experience/knowledge of immigration law highly desirable but not indispensable
Good communication skills
Ability to work well with others in an informal but professional environment
Familiar with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Organized and client-oriented
60 or more college credits or a paralegal certificate
Bachelors degree preferred; Law School student highly desirable

LALDEF acts as a resource hub for the local immigrant community, helping dismantle the barriers that stand in the way to a more fair and just society, and supporting the incorporation of these immigrants to the social fabric. Our purpose is to support immigrants maintain their livelihoods, freedom and self sufficiency, facilitate their integration into their local communities, Consistent with our nation’s values and respect for human rights, we believe that helping immigrants obtain jobs, homes, and access to health care and education, and thus build better futures for themselves and their children, while continuing to strive, assimilate and be accepted into American society, will strengthen our nation. Ultimately, we serve the community at large by creating cross-cultural understanding between native and foreign-born, accepting and appreciating our differences, while recognizing our common humanity and mutual interest in contributing to a thriving, fair, diverse community.
