The American Red Cross (ARC) International Services Department (ISD) seeks to prevent and alleviate human suffering around the world by responding to disasters, building safer, more resilient communities, and educating future humanitarians. With programs and partners in 70 countries, the American Red Cross working to strengthen the global Red Cross Red Crescent Network in order to deliver critical assistance to some of the most vulnerable communities in the world, reaching 100 million people annually.

Description of the Department:

The International Policy and External Affairs (IPEA) team is comprised of three sub-groups: International Policy and Relations (IPR); International Humanitarian Law (IHL); and Restoring Family Links (RFL). IPR works to strengthen the engagement of the American Red Cross in the Red Cross and Red Crescent global network, and helps to develop and advocate around International Services positions on humanitarian issues. IHL provides education and awareness of the international laws of armed conflict. RFL works to reunite families separated by international armed conflict or natural disaster.

Description of the Intern Position:

The International Policy and External Affairs meeting and event planning intern will be responsible for assisting the members of the IPEA team, as directed by the Global Events Manager, with the planning, organization and execution of various events and conferences, including but not limited to: venue and vendor research, room setups, logistics memo preparation including mapping of venue locations, name badge and table tent preparation, budget preparation assistance, registrant and security list preparation, setup of the event with AV and IT, presence during the event or conference to run presentations, assistance at registration/check in, passing of microphones in the conference room, greeting catering and supervising catering set up, etc.

Hours and Length of Internship:

Preference is for an intern who can work part time (20 hours per week), starting as soon as possible at least through the fall semester, with the possibility of extension. This is an unpaid internship.

Skills and Qualifications Requested:

  • Interest in international non-profit organizations and readiness to learn about the valuable mission of the Red Cross and Red Crescent global network;
  • Preference for a current student in the meeting/event planning field--school credits can be earned;
  • Strong computer and web research skills;
  • Characteristics such as responsibility; ability to work reliably on an occasionally unpredictable schedule and on time; precision; maturity; ability to work independently and in a team; highly organized; ability to handle multiple tasks at the same time; and ability to work under deadline pressure;
  • Willingness to do basic research and provide administrative support, depending on daily priorities

Description

The national headquarters of the American Red Cross provides assistance with shaping and leading the organization in our mission and strategic plan. National Headquarters also assists with technical guidance to the many Red Cross units, such as Chapters, Armed Forces Emergency Services Stations and Blood Services regions. These units are responsible for the direct service to the community including disaster response and preparedness, messaging to Armed Forces military and their families, collecting and delivering blood products, teaching health and safety skills and helping reunite families through our international services.
