Restore Habitat at Pine Bend Bluffs [FULL]

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Friends of the Mississippi River

Join Friends of the Mississippi River, Flint Hills Resources and Great River Greening as we return to the Flint Hills property within the Pine Bend Bluffs Natural Area along the Mississippi River -- one of the largest and most diverse native ecosystems left in the metro area. The site is only accessible to the public for special events such as this.

This award-winning restoration project includes a sand-gravel prairie, oak savanna and oak forest plant communities. Pine Bend is part of the Mississippi River migratory bird flyway -- host to 40 percent of North American waterfowl and millions of migratory songbirds.

Working with FMR and Great River Greening ecologists and staff, volunteers will remove invasive species -- helping to stack pre-cut buckthorn brush -- and assist with other restoration tasks. Everyone will be encouraged to work at their own comfort level and no previous experience is necessary. All tools and supplies -- including coffee, morning snacks and a hot lunch -- will be provided.

The location is roughly 25 minutes south of Minneapolis/St. Paul and 15 minutes west of Hastings. All registrants will be emailed directions to the meeting spot along with all other event basics. For security purposes, all volunteers must be 15 or older and include a full current address with their registration.

Ready to register?

To ensure adequate supplies -- including lunch! -- advance registration is required. Registration must close Monday, October 20th.

Mission Statement

Friends of the Mississippi River (FMR) engages people to protect, restore and enhance the Mississippi River and its watershed in the Twin Cities region.

Description

Friends of the Mississippi River is proud to work with roughly 3,000 volunteers annually.

We keep volunteering simple, fun and satisfying -- there are no applications, and you can sign up for one event or several. We list events especially in need of volunteers here on VolunteerMatch.com, but maintain a full calendar of 60+ events a year at www.fmr.org/events.

Our project work includes conservation and restoration of natural areas and habitat, education on watershed protection issues, and organizing activities that connect the public to the Mississippi River.
