The Indo-American Center (IAC) is seeking a creative, organized, detailed oriented and responsible individual to serve as its Event Planning Intern. The Event Planning Intern will be supervised by the Development Coordinator and will work to implement the planning and logistics of IAC’s Annual Fall Banquet on October 12, 2014. The Annual Fall Banquet is a major source of funding for IAC and will bring together many high profile individuals from the South Asian community. Upon successful completion of the internship, the intern will have gained valuable hands-on experience in event planning and non-profit organizational development. A stipend of $500 will also be issued at the end of the internship period.

RESPONSIBILITES

  1. Responsible for creating visual aids and layout for the Annual Banquet book using Adobe InDesign and Publisher
  2. Assist with updating Lifetime Donor Database
  3. Develop and organize promotional slide show using PowerPoint as well as brochures if needed
  4. Assist with online database management including updates, data entries and donor related data updates
  5. Stay up-to-date on mailings, event postings and other event related items per deadlines determined by the Development Coordinator

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. Develop and improve written and verbal communication skills in a professional manner
  2. Develop an understanding of behind the scenes nonprofit organizing and fund raising, from donor relations to event planning
  3. Work directly with Development Coordinator to learn about donor management and to development interpersonal skills with the clients and high profile individuals

TIME COMMITMENT

  1. Available for 20 hours per week during normal business hours (9am-5pm) for 10-12 weeks, beginning in September 2014.
  2. Up to 40 hours per week for the two weeks prior to the event on Sunday, Octoberber 12, 2014 (must be available all day on banquet date)
  3. Hours will take place at the Indo-American Center located at 6328 N. California Avenue, Chicago, IL
  4. Schedule will be flexible with individual availability, except for the two weeks leading up to the event, must be available for up to 40 hours

SPECIALS SKILLS DESIRED

  1. Proficient in Adobe InDesign required and excellent working knowledge in Microsoft Office including Publisher, PowerPoint and Word
  2. Ability to time manage under the pressure of deadlines a must
  3. Superior organization and communication skills including emails communication, phone calls and face-to-face interactions and must be extremely detail oriented
  4. Interest in working with diverse communities, including limited English speakers and an interest in non-profit development

IAC offers a variety of programs and services including: adult English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, civic engagement and community organizing, health education, public benefits connection, immigration legal services, a monthly pro-bono legal clinic, citizenship classes, community navigators program, and senior citizen workshops.
