Back to School Backpacks for Homeless Children (Seattle)
Do you remember that first day of school? New classroom, new teacher, new school, and hopefully new friends? Now try and remember what that first day might have been like if you didn't have any school supplies to put in your desk? And what if on top of no supplies, you were wearing your brothers old shoes that didn't fit, so they were duct taped to stay on?
Unfortunately this scenario plays out much too often for the kids in our programs. The homeless kids in our shelters, the families fleeing domestic violence, the families new to the country, all of them are in different situations, but all of them have that same first day of school in common. Embarrassed, unprepared, unable to feel safe and secure, how could they possibly be ready to learn?
We can help them become so, by the kindness of strangers- by the kindness of YOU! Here is what you can do to help that first day of school be full of successes and not uncertainties!
Our kids need to be armed with the tools to learn this fall, so we ask you to sponsor one or both of our back to school baskets:
School Days- Backpacks only These are the annual back to school backpacks. We need to provide one for every child entering K thru 12th grade, in every program here at the YWCA, so that's a lot of backpacks we need help getting, last year it was over 1500. To provide a backpack just pick a grade and a gender, get a brand new backpack and stuff it with grade level school supplies. Most stores will have the list by grades of what should be included. We are always short on cool teen backpacks, or pink little girl ones, both equally important. These need to be dropped between 8am and 4pm on August 26th at our 2820 E. Cherry St. offices.
Back to School in Style Baskets This basket has you matched with an individual child to take care of all the student's needs. You would be responsible for getting their backpack and all their supplies and also getting them a new outfit for the first day of school. So many of these kids are wearing the wrong size shoes, or clothes with holes in them, so let's outfit them with 1 full new outfit so their first step into school is a comfortable one. One outfit equals= 1 top, 1 bottom, 1 sweater, 1 pair of shoes, socks, and underwear. You'll be assigned a specific child to shop for, like our adopt a family program. These need to be dropped between 8am and 4pm on August 25th at our 2820 E. Cherry St. offices.
School Supply Drives Not a basket at all, just a group of kind hearted individuals that have gathered supplies to help us spread to the kids in the shelter, when we don't have enough backpacks, we can give the supplies. You would just decide where and when to hold the drive, your work, church, neighborhood, etc, and focus on a couple items, like USB drives and collect for a certain number of days, and see what you get!!! This is a huge help, and bridges the gap when we don't have enough. These need to be dropped between 8am and 4pm on August 25th at our 2820 E. Cherry St. offices
Back to School Clothes Drive Just like the above school supply drive, this is just you and a group collecting items to turn in, except this time, we are focused on those nice new clothes for the first day of school. Have all your friends and family scour Target ads, and find those great deals, as these clothes must be new. All sizes and gender, as we serve entering K thru entering 12th grade. Tops, bottoms, sweaters, socks, shoes, jackets, undies, we need it all. This is a huge help, we don't ever have nearly enough. These need to be dropped between 8am and 4pm on August 25th at our 2820 E. Cherry St. offices
Gift Card Drive To simplify giving for the busy person, just donate a gift card to help purchase all of the above. We will use the gift cards to purchase the above items to fill gaps of what's come in. Sometimes simpler than doing the shopping, grab a gift card for any amount while at your local grocery store. All amounts, to all locations are appreciated.
As always, pick and choose what works best for you, it's all appreciated, and we have even more kids this year than ever before- record setting numbers. . . so spread the word!!
THANK YOU -- YOU are the HEROS making a difference in children's lives!!
