ORGANIZATION: SOAR 55, Service Opportunities After Reaching 55

Looking for someone who is 55 plus.

Mentor an incarcerated woman and help her get a "step up in life" through education. As a mentor, join a team of volunteers and help an inmate work towards her college degree through Boston University in partnership with Partakers "College Behind Bars" program. No academic training necessary just a desire to support and help an individual. Training and support provided. 1 year commitment.


Responsibilities:

Mentors offer academic support to the student through:

  • Providing consistent support, encouragement and confidence building
  • Encouraging the student to set goals for coursework
  • Validating the inherent worth, gifts, and talents of the students
  • Empowering the mentee to advocate for her/himself
  • Helping with study skills and time management
  • Giving feedback and suggestions about topic development for papers and projects
  • Offering additional resources and/or making reading suggestions related to coursework or career objectives
  • Attending regular mentoring team meetings
  • Send a visit report after each session to the team/organization

SOAR 55 is closing as of March 31. The SOAR 55 Nonprofit Management Consultants are exploring opportunites to become its own 501c3 program at this time
