Mentoring
Help a child learn and grow

Description: The Children’s Home and Aid Excellence Academies target youth 10-21 years old who are in foster care, and provide services and therapies as extended support for the foster children and their families. Through mentoring, tutoring and positive support, The Children’s Home Aid Excellence Academy helps students build confidence, self-esteem, life skills and academic skills.

Moving from home to home in Foster care frequently causes children to fall far behind academically, and these youth struggle to perform at grade level. One of our corporate partners has offered enrollment into a degree/job training course for Children's Home Aid clients, but this is contingent on their ability to pass a math test which includes Algebra I and II. Tutors are needed to help the youth become proficient enough in this subject that they would be able to pass the test and receive this amazing job-training position.

Time: Any weekday - 1x a week or more. 4:00-6:00pm. Alternately, volunteers could meet at foster home on weekends or at a local public library.

In order to ensure the safety of our clients and staff, all regularly scheduled volunteers participate in a screening process including an in-person interview, health screen & TB test and fingerprinting background check.

About the Excellence Academy: One of the biggest struggles facing at-risk foster children is maintaining interest and performance in school. Through mentoring, tutoring and positive support, The Children's Home Aid Excellence Academy helps students build confidence, self-esteem, life skills and academic skills.

The Excellence Academy targets youth 10 years old and older who are in need of placement stability. These youth are placed in special foster care homes with foster parents who are trained to work with the children to develop discipline along with academic and social skills. The program includes weekly, professional in-home visits, service planning (which incorporates the services the Academy provides), respite, and extended support for the foster families.

Available services include: educational tutoring and study hall; independent living skills including life skills classes, employment readiness, computer literacy, and youth leadership. There are also mental health services including individual, group, and family therapy, recreational activities, and mentoring.
