SUMMARY

Health Resources in Action’s mission is to help people to live healthier lives and build healthy communities through prevention, health promotion, policy, and research. Working with institutions, organizations, and communities in New England and around the country, HRiA offers a wide variety of training, program development, management, and communication services.

The 84 is housed under the Training and Capacity Building Department (TCB), which is widely recognized for its youth development approach. This approach recognizes and builds on young people’s assets and strengths. TCB builds healthy communities by increasing the capacities of youth and the adults who work with them by providing a comprehensive set of consultative services (including facilitative training, technical assistance, program development, relationship building, and event planning) to not for profit organizations, public sector agencies, community coalitions, youth serving organizations and individuals.

The 84 Intern’s role is to support The 84 recruitment, events and projects. The Intern will be responsible for a wide range of duties addressing the recruitment, administrative, communications/promotions, event planning and other needs of The 84 and the department.

The 84 is a program funded by the Department of Public Health in which after-school groups, or Chapters, of youth are set up to do activities that we provide for them to fight against the tobacco industry in their communities. This program has always aimed to get 100 groups from across the state to participate. Currently, we have sixty groups enrolled. The college intern would be responsible for recruiting as many new groups as possible - whether that is by attending meetings in the community, making cold calls, having a table set up at an event, doing recruitment presentations to high schools, or compiling a set of best practices for recruitment and engagement of youth across Massachusetts. This would be the primary focus of the position.

During the school year, the youth in 84 Chapters conduct many surveys in their community and submit the data to HRiA. The college intern would need to have the skills necessary to input this data into Excel, analyze it, and put it into a report format that is easy for the groups and public health professionals in the field to use. They would also be responsible for ensuring that the groups were giving us the surveys in a timely manner, which would involve client management skills and good interpersonal skills.

Two events that we would require attendance for would be the fall training in Worcester on October 18, 2014 and the spring legislative day at the State House on March 18, 2015.

This position is unpaid but would be an excellent organization to have on any resume if the student’s goal is to work in the public health sector.
