Reading Avenue
Children reading a book to a furry friend at Reading Avenue.

Reading Avenue is a children's program that combines literacy with fun activities such as games and reading sessions with a trained animal assisted therapy dog. Reading Avenue occurs at our Ames location. We are seeking a few regular volunteers to assist us with staffing this activity. All sessions occur on-site at Eastwood Apartments in Ames. All activities are pre-planned and structured by our staff ahead of time. We are also seeking volunteers who may have a certified therapy dog to add to our roster. Reading Avenue occurs on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month beginning at 2:45 pm. Mission Statement

To cultivate opportunities for vibrant neighborhoods and communities in Iowa.

Description

Community Housing Initiatives works to improve neighborhoods and communities through the development and preservation of high quality housing. We are also focused on working with local neighborhood residents in central Iowa with achieving priorities on their neighborhood plans.

Our Resident and Community Services Department was developed in 2006. Under our Resident Services branch we offer residents of our housing projects the sponsorship of social events, health and wellness activities, service coordination of social services for specific needs, and programs focused on youth. CHI has housing projects across Iowa in many locations and Resident Services is available for every housing property we own.

We recently joined a collaboration with other organizations to support the revitalization efforts of 3 urban core neighborhoods in Des Moines. We serve as both a member of the steering committee and project management team to ensure the priorities and goals for each neighborhood are met. Our focus areas address neighborhood priorities in housing, youth services, and resident capacity building. CHI works with many volunteers at the local level to not only accomplish our strategic goals, but to also ensure we are making a strong positive impact for the areas we serve.
