Volunteers needed to assist instructor in a multi-level Vocational English as a Second Language (ESL) class for immigrant janitors in Palo Alto. Teaching Aides will assist the instructor, often working with small groups or individual students to provide extra support.
The class is a fun learning environment where low-wage workers, many of whom have had little formal education, have a chance to better their English skills, allowing them to feel more confident in their work and in navigating life in the U.S. In turn, volunteers with BSP receive training and acquire skills in teaching ESL, gain knowledge about the issues facing newcomer families, and learn about the social services and other resources available to immigrants and low-wage workers in the Bay Area.
Class location: Palo Alto
Class schedule: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, & Thursdays from 5:30-6:30pm
Time Commitment: 1 hour per week on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday
Volunteer Skill Requirements:
- Patience, enthusiasm, and flexibility.
- Ability to volunteer at least once a week for a minimum of four months.
- Dependability.
- Spanish speaking skills and teaching experience helpful, but not required.
