Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada

Careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) are growing five times faster than any other. However, girls are half as likely as boys to be interested or confident in STEM fields - despite having similar abilities.

That’s why Girl Scouts has developed Imagine Your STEM Future, a series to introduce high school girls to STEM careers. Our research shows that girls’ interest in STEM and confidence in their ability to pursue STEM careers soars when they learn in a supportive, all-girls environment, do hands-on activities, and understand how scientists can help people and make a positive change in the world!

The Imagine Your STEM Future series is specifically designed to help girls:

  • team up to do engaging experiments
  • learn about - and meet! - female scientists who can serve as role models
  • explore STEM careers and find out how scientists can make the world a better place

Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada, with the generous support of AT&T and Girl Scouts of the USA, has teamed up with Washoe County School District to deliver this impactful program to 200 underserved girls across Reno/Sparks in the Fall 2014. We are looking for STEM professionals and enthusiasts who would like to help us deliver this powerful series!

Series Facilitators will deliver the 7-week Imagine Your STEM Future curriculum after school at each of our four identified High Schools (October-December 2014). Groups will meet once a week after school and there are sites available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. You will receive a comprehensive orientation, an opporunity to try all of the experiments first hand, and plently of resources to ensure your success at the site!

Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character who work to make the world a better place.

Description

We’re Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada and we’re excited that you’re here! As your local council, we’re your guide and partner to all things Girl Scouts and we can’t wait to get you started.

But first, you may be wondering a little about us...so here’s what you need to know:

We BELIEVE... in the power of girls. From her first troop sleepover over with her very best friends to hiking the top of Mount Rose to designing her own adventure - our girls find the sparkle that makes them special. We think that’s pretty cool.

We CONNECT...over 96,000 square miles in northern Nevada and northeastern California. That’s Alturas to Tahoe to Bishop, Ely to Elko, and everywhere in between. We have over 4,500 girls and 2,000 volunteers experiencing new adventures every single day and making friendships that will last a lifetime. Teamwork, friendship, and community unite us and we shine so much brighter when we’re together.

We GET INVOLVED...in our communities hundreds of service projects are completed each year! Our girls and volunteers change the world through small acts of kindness and through BIG ideas that make a lasting impact. Serving meals at a soup kitchen, singing holiday carols to bring cheer, and collecting donations for pet shelters are just a few of the awe-inspiring projects that show a girl she can make a difference in the world.
