Eckley Miners' Village has opportunites for tour guides! We have tours that leave the museum at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. We also will have training that works around your schedule. We are looking for individuals who are excited about history and have good people skills. This is a perfect opportunity to do some volunteering that helps us in a big way. Mission Statement
Eckley Miners’ Village is a surviving, living example of the hundreds of company-owned anthracite mining communities that thrived during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in northeasternPennsylvania. The Village preserves and interprets everyday life in a culturally, ethnically, and economically diverse mining community through research; maintenance of historic structures and the town plan; artifact collections management, care, acquisition, and exhibition; and presentation of interpretive, educational programs appealing to a broad audience.
Description
Eckley Miners' Village is a living history museum focusing on the daily life of the anthracite coal miner and his family. Settled in 1854, the village is one of hundreds of "patch" towns built in the region during the 19th century, but it is unique in the respect that it is an almost entirely preserved town. Visitors are able to stand on the 3/4 mile long road and see what it would be like to live in an 1800's coal town. Our site is complete with two churches, miners' dwellings, and a doctor's office. It was also the site used in the movie "The Molly Maguires" starring Sean Connery, Richard Harris, and Samantha Eggar.
Eckely Miners' Village is a prime example of a planned 19th century industrial coal mining town. Companies often designed and constructed rural communities to house their employees in close proximity to the collieries or factories at which they worked. This allowed the companies greater control over their employees. Eckley Miners' Village represents the lives of immigrant anthracite coal miners and their families as they lived through the industrial revolution.
