Application Instructions

It is a great blessing to be able to host volunteers from all parts of India and the rest of the world. As an organization we love meeting new people, and serving the poor and needy side by side. We learn from each other, we make new and lasting friendships, and we expand our network of friends around the world, through which we can spread the word about our work and raise resources on behalf of those with very little.

The volunteer experience in India, especially for non-Indians, can be a very inspiring and encouraging time. Each individual comes with a different set of expectations. As an organization, we try to accommodate a variety of volunteer aspirations. We are, of course, limited by our own weaknesses, as well as by a serious lack of resources. This brief document is to orient volunteers on how we will approach situations where their expectations, or ours, are not fitting well together.

With all volunteers it is expected that they will arrange their own flight tickets and visas. They will have to bring money for local travel and food, as well as travel between cities and also for gifts. They should have access to a credit card or other source of funds to use in case of emergency (ie, illness requiring hospitalization and significant cost). Volunteers should be aware that they are likely to get sick while visiting India, and that good medical care is available here. All visitors are advised to avoid eating uncooked vegetables, street food, and to stay away from water that is not bottled. Mosquito repellent is often a useful friend.

In the initial days of a volunteer experience, volunteers will be assisted in finding their way to the local program sites. Whenever volunteers are at HOPE sites they will be expected to follow the guidance of the local on-site program manager or coordinator. At the site the volunteer can see what the local needs are, and also communicate what their interests and abilities are, and a good "on the ground" plan can be made.

About GlobalGiving

Location:

Mission Statement

Build an efficient, open, thriving marketplace that connects people who have community and world-changing ideas with people who can support them.

Description

GlobalGiving was founded by two former World Bank executives who decided to use the Internet to create a highly efficient marketplace. The GlobalGiving platform enables more funding to reach projects throughout the globe, and, at the same time, provides a more transparent, engaging way for donors to give.
Because we enable donors to give directly to projects, they know exactly where their money is going. Donors can see progress updates on most projects as funding is received and goals are met.

Donations made through GlobalGiving are higher impact because:

  • Money is going directly to a well-defined project versus supporting general operating expenses
  • Projects on globalgiving.com have exposure to thousands of donors, enabling us to aggregate multiple sources of funding for each project
  • Many projects on globalgiving.com are located in the developing world where a little money goes a long way
