POSITION: Volunteer Program Assistant

ORGANIZATION: Food Forward (501c3 non-profit), www.foodforward.org

HOURS: 10 - 12 hours per week: Twice a week at our North Hollywood office

COMPENSATION: Unpaid. All non-commuter miles driven will be reimbursed.

ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW: Food Forward's mission is to rescue fresh local produce that would otherwise go to waste, connecting this abundance with people in need, and inspiring others to do the same. We work with 7,000 volunteers across Los Angeles and Ventura County and our volunteers participate in approximately 100 events per month. The food we rescue through our Backyard Harvest and Farmers Market Recovery Programs helps feed Southern California's most vulnerable. We also aim to tap into an awareness and consciousness of sustainability and community building, and to become a bright voice on Southern California's edible landscape around food security and food justice issues

POSITION OVERVIEW: We are looking for an office-based volunteer to help with Food Forward's volunteer outreach and coordination. This person will work directly with the Volunteer Manager and our Backyard Harvest and Farmers Market Recovery program staff. Tasks will include listing and managing volunteer events on sites like VolunteerMatch, & LA Works and community boards, replying to email inquiries about volunteer opportunities, researching groups and community events for volunteer outreach and updating our volunteer database. This position provides an opportunity to become deeply involved with a diverse group of people in the urban food justice community, while working for a prominent and growing nonprofit.

An ideal candidate will have:

• A passion for food justice and community building

• Strong communication and people skills, along with an ability to share the Food Forward mission to inspire volunteerism

• The ability to cultivate and recognize special skills in volunteers to foster a continuing and fulfilling volunteer relationship

• Knowledge of LA and Ventura counties

• An interest in researching new and creative methods of volunteer engagement across Los Angeles and Ventura

• Experience in database management, social media, WordPress, Vertical Response, Excel and Google Docs. PR experience is a plus!

• A strong sense of being a team player

• 1-2 years of experience; Grad MBA students are welcome to apply

Areas of assistance include:

• Responding to email inquiries about volunteer opportunities for individuals and groups

• Posting and managing volunteer events on third-party websites and community forums

• Informing current volunteers about upcoming events

• Managing volunteer registration and sending out event confirmations

• Online research

• Database management

• Social media
