The You Be The Chemist (YBTC) Challenge is an exciting academic contest that uses the drama of competition to encourage grade 5-8 students to explore important chemistry concepts, scientific theories, and laboratory safety. Think spelling bees or quiz bowls but with science questions!
The Challenge is made possible by dedicated volunteers who devote time and energy to champion science education in their communities. These superstars are our Challenge Organizers! Each Local Challenge site needs one or more committed volunteers to serve as the site's Organizer, with a lead volunteer filling the role of primary Local Challenge Organizer. With the support of CEF, Organizers coordinate all aspects of their site’s Local Challenge, from getting schools involved in fall to planning the competition in spring. Being a Local Challenge Organizer requires a significant investment of time, but it comes with numerous rewards, most notably seeing students in your community have fun and succeed in science!

The Chemical Educational Foundation (CEF)'s largest program is the The You Be The Chemist Challenge (Challenge).
The Challenge is an exciting academic contest that uses the drama of competition to encourage grade 5 ‒8 students to explore important chemistry concepts, scientific theories, and laboratory safety. Think spelling bees or quiz bowls but with science questions!
The Challenge:
- Introduces students to the central role of chemistry in all of the sciences and in their everyday lives.
- Promotes science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education.
- Provides educators with a fun, interactive way to educate their students and assess their learning.
- Encourages parents to participate in their child's education.
- Allows industry members to connect with their community and actively show their support for science education.
