Heartland Alliance is currently recruiting a volunteer or intern for a unique position working with refugee English language learners engaged in our Vocational literacy Hospitality and Food Service training programs. These programs work with students to both increase their literacy levels and their hard and soft job skills, and ultimately place them in jobs providing economic security for their families. The Employment literacy intern will work directly with the Program Coordinator/Instructor to assist in lesson implementation and work one-on-one and in small groups with participants to assist them in securing employment. This is an opportunity to make an impact in the education and economic security of newcomers to Chicago and gain skills in ESL instruction and Job development in the social service sector.


Duties of HOSPITALITY PROGRAM Intern

  • Assist with pre-testing and intake process in the recruitment phase of the class.
  • Help create and manage paper and digital files for each participant in the hospitality programs.
  • Help create and update Google Doc) to keep track of job applications/interviews, etc. for all job developers.
  • Assist with interview practice/ Consult with each student one on one to determine his/her employment strengths, and prepare scripts for interviews
  • Help set up group activities and participate in role play with the instructor when needed.
  • Accompany class instructor and students to hotel tours downtown. Escort students on job interviews, job fairs, job trips, etc.
  • Assist with graduation ceremony prep: assembling graduation packets including graduation certificates, CTA passes, class photo, copies of resumes, etc.
  • Coordinate Hospitality Interview Clothing in Storage Area. Keep well organized and labeled...and determine clothing needs for each session. Assist with soliciting interview clothing donations
  • Maintain student contact lists REGULARLY.
  • Help students with applications online as well as during job trips.

Requirements

  • Interest in the hotel/hospitality industry
  • Some experience in Customer Service
  • Interest in working with the refugee population
  • Outgoing, energetic, and eager to interact with students
  • Responsive to each student’s needs and challenges
  • Basic computer skills (Word/Excel)

Refugee & Immigrant Community Services (RICS) partners with refugees, asylees, immigrants and survivors of trafficking to address their needs by connecting them to their new community, providing education and employment services, and the help they need to succeed in their new country. RICS annually resettles more than 150 individuals in Chicago from places like Afghanistan, Burma, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Iraq, Sudan, Ukraine, and Syria. RICS serves an additional 500 refugees through a variety of services including cultural orientation, adjustment counseling, employment, job readiness and placement services, as well as medical case management, family literacy, and English language training for adults.
